Padel Americano for 8 players

Eight players on two courts is the cleanest Americano there is: everybody plays every round and nobody ever sits out. Here is a full six-round schedule you can use tonight, and the reason it works out so neatly.

Why eight is the number everyone wants

Two courts hold eight people, so with eight players the arithmetic lands exactly: nobody rests, nobody waits, and the game has no dead time in it. Every other group size spends part of the night deciding who sits down, and eight simply never has that conversation.

It is also the size at which a full rotation is reachable. Each player has seven possible partners, and seven rounds is enough for everyone to partner everyone exactly once. If your booking is two hours, play all seven and the Americano is mathematically complete: no repeated pair in the whole game, and every player has been on court with every other.

Six rounds, which is what a ninety-minute booking holds, gets you twenty-four of the twenty-eight possible pairs with no repeats at all. That is close enough that nobody notices the difference.

Two courts or one

With one court, eight players means four on and four off every round, and the game halves. It works, and plenty of groups do it when only one court was free, but expect to spend as long watching as playing. The generator spreads the rest so the same four never sit twice in a row.

If you have a choice, two courts and eight players is the best value in social padel: a full court's worth of play for everyone, for the price of two bookings split eight ways.

How long it takes

Count about twelve minutes for a round to sixteen points, once people have stopped warming up. Six rounds plus a warm-up fills ninety minutes almost exactly. Seven rounds needs closer to a hundred minutes, so book two hours if you want the complete rotation.

Announce the number of rounds before the first serve. An Americano that stops because the court ran out has no winner, and that is a sour way to end a good game.

Questions organisers ask

How many rounds for 8 players?
Seven rounds gives every player every other player as a partner exactly once, which is the complete Americano. Six rounds fit a ninety-minute booking and still produce twenty-four different pairs with no repeats.
Can 8 players play an Americano on one court?
Yes. Four play and four rest each round, so the game is half play and half watching. Rotate the resting four so the same people do not sit twice in a row.
Does anyone sit out with 8 players and 2 courts?
No. Eight players fill two courts exactly, so every player is on court in every round.

After the schedule, the game still has to run

An Americano schedule is the easy half of the game. The hard half is everything that moves: somebody drops out an hour before, two more ask to come, and the score lives on a phone that keeps locking itself.

That is what MyPadel does. You open a game and send one link. Players put themselves on the list and take themselves off it, the pairs rebuild when the number changes, and the standings update on everyone's screen as the scores come in.

The generator above stays free and account-free, always. The live game needs a free organiser account, because a game has to belong to somebody.
