What Mixicano is
Mixicano is Americano with one rule added: a pair is always one man and one woman. Everything else is the same — partners change every round, points are individual, and the winner is a person rather than a team.
That single rule is what makes it work for mixed groups. In an open draw the four strongest players end up together sooner or later, and in most mixed groups that means the men. Forcing every pair to be mixed spreads the levels without anyone having to say so out loud.
The arithmetic that matters: each court takes two men and two women. Two courts need four of each, three courts six of each. If one side is short, the generator says exactly how many are missing rather than quietly building something else.
Uneven numbers are fine. If there are seven men and five women on two courts, four of each play and the rest sit out in turn — and the generator spreads the rest so the same people do not miss twice in a row.
Scoring is the Americano kind: a pool of points shared between the pairs, usually 24 or 32, and the round ends when the pool is used up or the clock runs out.
Questions organisers ask
- What is the difference between Americano and Mixicano?
- One rule. Americano pairs people for variety; Mixicano pairs them for variety too, but never puts two men or two women together. Scoring and rotation are identical.
- How many players do you need?
- Four is the minimum — two men and two women on one court. Eight on two courts is the usual social evening, and it needs four of each.
- What if there are more men than women?
- The extra players sit out in turn. The generator uses as many courts as the smaller side allows and spreads the rest evenly, so nobody sits out twice running.
- Is Mixicano the same as Mixed Americano?
- Yes, the names are used interchangeably. Some clubs also say Mixed Doubles Americano. All three mean pairs of one man and one woman.
- Can I use it for a couples night?
- For rotating partners, yes. If couples must stay together all evening, that is a fixed-pairs format instead, which is a different thing entirely.
