Padel Americano for 16 players

Sixteen players on four courts is a club game rather than a social: everybody plays every round, the scoresheet becomes a real job, and most players will finish having partnered under half the group. Here is the schedule, and an honest note on when to split instead.

48 different pairs over 6 rounds, no pair repeated. Nobody sits out.

What sixteen actually feels like

Four courts, sixteen players, nobody resting. Six rounds gives forty-eight different pairs and no repeats, which sounds like a lot until you divide it: each player partners six of the other fifteen. The other nine they meet only across the net, or not at all.

That is the honest shape of a big Americano. It is a good game and a poor rotation, and knowing which one you came for decides whether sixteen is the right number.

When to split into two groups of eight

If the group's whole point is that everyone plays with everyone, two separate Americanos of eight beat one of sixteen, and it is not close. Eight players complete their rotation in seven rounds. Sixteen would need fifteen.

Split by level if the range is wide, or at random if it is not, and let the two groups swap courts at half time so nobody feels put in the slow group for the night. Two groups of eight on four courts also means two shorter scoresheets, which is the other thing that breaks at sixteen.

Keep it as one group of sixteen when the game is social first: a club game, a new season, people who do not know each other yet. Then meeting nine people as opponents is the point, not a shortfall.

Running four courts at once

Name the courts the way the club names them. Four courts is where a sheet that says Court 1 to 4 while the club says 5 to 8 starts costing a lost pair every round.

Start every round together. With four courts the spread between the fastest and slowest match grows, and if each court starts as it finishes, by round four you have four separate games running at different speeds and one table that no longer means anything.

Have somebody who is not playing hold the scores for the first two rounds, if anybody is willing. At sixteen players the cost of a lost round is four matches, not one.

Questions organisers ask

How many courts for 16 players?
Four, and then nobody rests. On three courts, four players sit out each round; on two, half the group is off at any moment.
Is an Americano good for 16 players?
It works, but each player only partners six of the other fifteen in a six-round game. If a full rotation matters, run two Americanos of eight instead.
How long does a 16-player Americano take?
The same as any other size: about twelve minutes a round. Sixteen players does not make the game longer, it makes the scoresheet bigger.

After the schedule, the game still has to run

An Americano schedule is the easy half of the game. The hard half is everything that moves: somebody drops out an hour before, two more ask to come, and the score lives on a phone that keeps locking itself.

That is what MyPadel does. You open a game and send one link. Players put themselves on the list and take themselves off it, the pairs rebuild when the number changes, and the standings update on everyone's screen as the scores come in.

The generator above stays free and account-free, always. The live game needs a free organiser account, because a game has to belong to somebody.
